To me, that was not just a viewership milestone; it was a reminder that Asia-Pacific fans still yearn to see their teams step onto the world stage.

Today, Riot Games is widening that door for VCS. The announcement about the 2027 season confirms something Vietnamese fans have waited for: VCS teams will gain additional paths into LCP and, further beyond, into international competition. But wider doors do not mean an easier road.

Before 2027, LCP – the highest-level convergence league in Asia-Pacific – ran a nearly closed model. Teams from VCS, PCS and LJL had only one chance per year to earn an LCP slot through the Promotion Series. If they failed, they waited 365 days. Worse, teams had to relocate to Taipei for most of the season, driving up operating costs and separating players from family and home fans.

VCS teams still have to win at every stage, still have to beat PCS, LJL and Wild Card teams. And when they reach international events, they still face LCK and LPL – regions with world-class training systems, finances and roster depth.

Still, I do not want to view this announcement through rose-colored glasses. Bringing teams back to their home regions reduces costs, but it carries a quiet price: when teams no longer gather in Taipei, cross-region scrim environments may become thinner. Smaller teams could lose valuable practice against stronger opponents. On top of that, performance-linked revenue can create hidden stratification. An underperforming LCP team that fails to qualify internationally for years may gradually fall behind. Sustainability is not just about opening the door; it is about making sure everyone has enough strength to walk through.

Vietnamese fans must also avoid a dangerous misunderstanding. A wider door does not mean we are guaranteed a team at international events. It means more chances, not pre-written results. Without care, the story of opportunity can turn into pressure for immediate success. That would betray the spirit of the reform.
